Industry: Telecommunications
Location: Philippines
Focus Areas: GRI Reporting, ESG Risk Management, Stakeholder Communication, Digital Inclusion
As the backbone of the Philippines’ digital economy, the telecommunications sector has experienced explosive growth in the past decade. But with that growth comes heightened visibility—and responsibility.
From 5G deployment and cell site construction to consumer data privacy and e-waste, telcos are increasingly being held accountable for how they operate, not just what they offer.
Consumers, regulators, investors, and advocacy groups are all asking:
In an age where connectivity is considered a public utility, transparency has become a core requirement for earning—and keeping—public trust.
To meet these demands and prepare for long-term sustainability, one Philippine-based telco implemented a GRI-aligned sustainability reporting framework. The process became a strategic opportunity to define not just their service coverage, but their social and environmental footprint.
The telco also integrated metrics aligned with SASB Telecommunications Standards and began referencing IFRS sustainability disclosures, particularly for data security, service reliability, and climate-related risk exposures.
The decision to adopt full ESG disclosure had operational and reputational payoffs beyond compliance.
GRI-based disclosures and documented stakeholder dialogue became instrumental in securing local permits for tower construction, especially in LGUs previously wary of health or environmental impacts.
As digital transactions surged, the company’s public disclosures on cybersecurity protocols, data breach incidents (or lack thereof), and customer education efforts reinforced consumer trust, particularly among enterprise clients.
Detailed tracking of energy use led to an internal cost-benefit analysis, prompting investment in more efficient cooling systems for data hubs and battery technology for off-grid towers—lowering both costs and emissions.
For the first time, the company disclosed rural service penetration, gender distribution in digital literacy training programs, and the number of new barangays connected per year—turning promises into KPIs.
This case makes one thing clear: in a sector that thrives on speed and bandwidth, transparency is the true differentiator. The GRI-aligned sustainability reporting approach allowed the telco to engage more meaningfully with customers, regulators, and employees—showing not only what it did, but why and how.
In doing so, it helped reframe the company from a service provider to a partner in digital development, capable of earning both revenue and trust in equal measure.
